  18. <p>     No, Melba Moore did not write Lift Every Voice and Sing,
  19. though she's often asked if she did. Her new version of the
  20. black national anthem could make it a hit for the first time
  21. since it was co-written in 1900 by black poet James Weldon
  22. Johnson. "For black kids who don't know their history," says
  23. Moore, who sang the hymn in a Washington school last week after
  24. a meeting with black Congressmen, "the song provides a bond."
  25. Profits from the song--the first single from her new album,
  26. Soul Exposed--will go to charity.
